Do you know of a survey that is freely available that analyses information about Software Project Managers and how they think and work?

No? Do you think it would be useful to have a baseline of key aspects of the state of Software Project Management assessed and updated from time-to-time?

This would be based on a set of responses from Project Managers (in the generic sense of anyone working in a management function within a software development project) to questions on:

  • basic demographics,
  • project management experience,
  • learning pathways,
  • problems they are facing and
  • what they see as their outlook for the next period.

The results would be open-sourced, both analysis and raw data alike with secondary analysis provided to gain greater insights.

You can see some interim examples released already this time around, based on the responses that I’ve received up to the end of November.

Well, the answers could be closer than we think, but I need your help.

I’ve started such a survey, called the State of Software Project Management 2015, and opened up the first round of questions for responses on 23/11/15.  I had planned to close the survey at the end of November, but have extended the closing date until midnight 7th December, as measured at Baker Island (a US Minor outlying island and in the latest time zone on earth).

What we will all get from this survey is a flavour of what range of skills software PM’s are using in the in the world today, how they obtained these skills, and what kinds of problems they are having.  I have 40 responses so far and would like to get that number up to give a bit of validity to the analysis.

I’d really appreciate everyone who is working, or has worked, in any way to manage or deliver projects completing the survey at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/aop-sospm2015

if you are able to help distribute this information, please send the link to this page to your friends and colleagues.  The more responses we get the greater validity the answers will have.

I will share the aggregated results and open-source the raw data, after when the survey closes.

This survey covers basic demographics, experience, learning pathways, problems they are facing and what they see as their outlook for 2016. I wanted to put some other questions in there but held back for fear of taking too much of people’s time.

The survey was opened for responses on 23/11/15 and is open through midnight 7th December, as measured at Baker Island (a US Minor outlying island and in the latest time zone on earth).
